Michael T. Mondak speaks in tribute to his personal hero

It was four years ago today that I was leaving church when I learned that the man who had been a great influence on my life, Alex Trebek, had died of pancreatic cancer at the age of 80.

The weekend had already been a difficult one with Penn State losing to Nebraska the day before and it was made even more difficult with the passing of Alex Trebek.

Reaction from around the world was swift.  Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated that

“Today, we lost a proud Canadian and beloved TV star who was a familiar face to millions of people across North America and around the world.

“For many of us, Alex Trebek was a daily part of our lives. As the host of Jeopardy! for almost four decades, he hosted more episodes of a single television game show than anyone else in history. We looked forward to his quick wit and wry jokes – and the questions about Canada he’d sneak into the show.

“Alex never hesitated to promote Canada on prime time TV, and to take the opportunity to stump even the brightest contestants with questions about Canadian culture, history, and geography.

“We will also never forget the night Alex showed up without his trademark moustache. For every memorable moment on the show, millions more were made in living rooms around the world, as friends and families huddled around the TV, shouting at the screen, looking for the Daily Double.

“Alex was honoured with awards throughout his career, from Daytime Emmys and a Canadian Academy Icon Award to stars on Canada’s Walk of Fame and the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He was also named an Officer of the Order of Canada for his dedication to educational, environmental, and humanitarian causes. Alex also served as Honorary President of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society.

“On behalf of all Canadians, Sophie and I offer our deepest condolences to Alex’s family, friends, and his many, many fans.”

National Hockey League commissioner Gary Bettman said that

“Alex was a passionate fan of our game and a true friend of our League.  He always said ‘yes’ when hockey called. We will miss him and send our condolences to his family and millions of friends and fans.”

Ken Jennings, the greatest Jeopardy! champion of all time, said

“Alex wasn’t just the best ever at what he did. He was also a lovely and deeply decent man, and I’m grateful for every minute I got to spend with him.”

Seinfeld star and former Celebrity Jeopardy! veteran Jason Alexander said in the style of the show’s timeless format:

“He was sweet, smart and graceful gentleman always and will be missed as he rests in gentle peace. Who is Alex Trebek?”

Singer Tony Bennett said

“Susan and I watch Jeopardy! every night and Alex Trebek was like a member of the family after so many years.  7pm in New York City won’t be the same without him… he will be missed.”

Family Feud host Steve Harvey said

“My heart is so sad over the passing of the classiest game show host of all time!!! His style was real to me ...... condolences to his entire family and fans.”

American Idol host Ryan Seacrest said

“Alex Trebek was like a family member who I watched every night. I remember going to the set to watch him tape a show before I started my TV career. He was a big influence and one of a kind. Rest In Peace, Alex.”

Former California First Lady Maria Shriver said

“My heart breaks for the Trebek family upon hearing this heartbreaking news. Alex Trebek was a legend. There was no one like him. Kind, elegant, talented, good. Heaven just became brighter and we here on earth mourn him.”

Wheel of Fortune letter activator Vanna White said that

“I will cherish the many memories I have shared with Alex Trebek that date back well before either of our careers took off. I will always be in awe of the way he faced the battle he fought so valiantly, and I’m devastated to lose my longtime friend. My heart is with his family, friends, co-workers and fans. There will never be another Alex Trebek and he will truly be missed.”

Former Norris Trophy winner PK Subban said

“Alex Trebek was a fighter, a gentleman, and a legend. Just like many fans, I also enjoyed watching jeopardy growing up. I’m happy I got to meet the man. Sending love to Alex’s family. RIP”🙏🏿❤️

Mike Eruzione, the captain of the 1980 gold medal winning USA hockey team, said

“RIP Alex Trebek. One thing people probably don’t know about you you were a pretty good hockey player and had so much fun playing with you in our celebrity games.”

Wheel of Fortune host Pat Sajak stated

“Alex Trebek’s courage, grace and strength inspired millions and awed those of us who knew him. A tremendous loss for his family, friends, co-workers and countless viewers. I was honored to be a friend and a part of his professional family for all these years. A very sad day.”
